Senior forward Ashley McInnes scored the game-winning goal for the second-ranked Tulsa men's soccer team, giving TU a 1-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 4-0 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 1-3 overall.
Tulsa captured the 2010 Tulsa Marriott Southern Hills Hurricane Classic team title, while McInnes, Ray Clark, Blaine Gonsalves and Austin Neil were named to the all-tournament team. McInnes was also selected as the tournament MVP.
"I was proud of our team effort today," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Sometimes you don't play your best, but you just have to grind it out and find a way to win and we did that today. SIU-Edwardsville set up a counter-attack and didn't allow us many chances, but the team kept fighting. This game was a good lesson for us and it is a great game to learn from."
McInnes' goal came in the 15th minute as he drilled in a free kick that was deflected off a SIU-Edwardsville player. It was his third goal of the season and 21st of his career.
Neil and McInnes led the TU attack with three shots apiece, while Chris Taylor attempted two shots. Ray Clark logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up three saves. Tulsa out-shot SIUE, 12-6, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, and had a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action on Friday, Sept. 17th against Saint Louis. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Hurricane Stadium.
Game footage is available from this match on the www.tulsahurricane.com website and includes an exclusive interview with Ashley.
We are all delighted with Ashley's continued success in his career at the University of Tulsa.
