La Crosse, Wis. - After playing the last four games on the road, the Viterbo University men's soccer team welcomed the opportunity to play in front of their own fans. The V-Hawks would not disappoint their fans either as they scored two goals in the final nine minutes to defeat UW-Superior 2-1.

The first half proved to be a defensive battle as neither team had quality scoring opportunities. UW-Superior would get a break late in the first half as Viterbo was whistled for a foul inside the penalty box. Richard Chegwin-Goelkel would give UW-Superior a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick with just over a minute to play in the half.

The second half would not be much different although the physicalness of the game would increase along with the intensity. Scoring opportunities increased in the second half as Viterbo outshot UW-Superior 8-2 but it did not look good for the V-Hawks as the game entered the final 10 minutes of play. That is when Viterbo would get two big time breaks. First, UW-Superior was whistled for a penalty just outside of the penalty box to give the V-Hawks a free kick. Senior Jamie Robertson (Langho, England) took the free kick and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1. Just two minutes later, UW-Superior was again whistled for a foul but this time it was inside the penalty box giving the V-Hawks penalty kick. Junior James Lockley (Manchester, England) took the penalty kick and gave the V-Hawks a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute.

Viterbo controlled most of the game as they outshot UW-Superior 15-6. Freshman Luke Newton (Richmond, England) played the whole game in goal for the V-Hawks and finished with one save. Tom Fitzer played all 90 minutes in goal for the Yellow Jackets and finished with three save. In what was a very physical game, both teams were called for a combined 27 fouls and there were seven yellow cards handed out.

The win snaps a three game losing streak for the V-Hawks and improves them to 2-4 on the season. The loss drops UW-Superior to 3-2 on the season. Viterbo will be in action next when they host Luther College on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
