The staff at College Sport USA are absolutely thriled to announce that Northern Illinois men's soccer freshman James Stevenson has been named to College Soccer News' list of 100 Freshman to Keep an Eye On.
Stevenson, a native of Falkirk, Scotland, played for the Scottish Schoolboy's National Team. The lengthy forward also played for Alloa Athletic FC's U-19 squad. As a striker for St. Mungo's high school, he scored 39 goals and registered 10 assists. His offensive proficiency helped his team to a regional championship and to the championship match of the Scottish Cup.
"James is a very talented striker who has shown in our fall camp and exhibition matches that he can contribute at this level," NIU head coach Eric Luzzi said. "He has an instinctual ability to finish, and once he gets used to the Division I style of play, I believe he will be a very dangerous player."
Stevenson has played in all three Huskie exhibitions, registering an assist in the Huskies' first game at Indianapolis.
"Like many of our newcomers, we expect James to compete for playing time," Luzzi said. "Our team is too deep for any spot on the field to be locked up."
Huskie junior Brad Horton was named to the list in 2008. At the end of his freshman campaign, Horton was named to the CSN Freshman All-America Second Team. He has led the Huskies in goals with 12 total over the last two years.
The Huskies kick-off the regular season at No. 19 Portland, Sept. 3. NIU plays its first home match against Oregon State, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
