As part of our ongoing educational supplements on the life of our student athletes in the United States, we are delighted to have input from Gregg Munn who joined NCAA Mars Hill University in North Carolina in August 2010. Gregg will be regularly updating everyone on his progress exclusively here at College Sport USA.
Gregg Munn's Online Diary:
So the season has finished and for me and the Mars Hill Lions it was a really good one, although we still could have achieved a lot more!
This season we broke so many records and did really well for the most part. Our record was 14-5-1 which is a big improvement from years before. We achieved a ranking of 13th in the nation and were unlucky to be beaten in the final of the SAC tournament final.
To achieve all of this in my first season in American College Soccer was really pleasing and to play such a big part in it was even more pleasing. Throughout the season I started every game in Central Midfield bar two. One due to suspension and the other I played Left Back in a win over Tusculum University.
The college soccer game obviously took a little time to adjust to but I adapted quickly and worked hard to stay in the team as the quality of the entire squad is unbelievable. Every single day you have to be on your game and constantly looking to improve you game. We have guys from all over the world on our team including Brazil, Ecuador, Columbia, Scotland, Canada, Germany and of course Americans. This allowed me to learn all about new cultures which was great and also allowed me to see how guys from other countries train and act on a daily basis.
Having the two Scottish guys there was great. Rury and Craig were brand new and really helped me settle in. They are both top guys and are really good players. Our assistant coach was also a real help because he is an English guy who played here for 2 and a half years so he was a real help to me when trying to adjust.
Our coach also demands the highest standards so every day was a new challenge for the team and for me individually. But this is what I wanted out of the whole experience.
The season has been over for a few weeks now so I have just been letting the legs rest and have been in the gym working on building up my upper body in time for spring lifting sessions.
At the moment I am in Georgia for my first Thanksgiving and it has been a really good experience learning how the Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and also getting an opportunity to see another state was good. I head back to the Hill on Sunday with only one week left of classes and then exams. Afterwards, I am going to stay with one of the American lads for a few Days before I fly back on the 20th of December to see family and friends, which will be good.
As I say, my first season in the States has been great. I have learned so much and improved my own game in order to adapt to the American Game. I have learned new cultures and have made new friends, especially Rury, Craig and Nick, and have had the time of my life because out of doing so well as a team.
Happy Thanksgiving and all the Best, Gregg Munn.
